AFP Member Spotlight…Sandina Heckert Position and Organization – Director of Development, Canterbury Choral Society Years in Fundraising – Three Best fundraising tip received – “It never hurts to ask!” is my motto. Of course a skilled fundraiser knows the best time to ask, but many people do not succeed in fundraising because they are afraid of rejection. That’s why it’s important to remember that if you want something, you have to ask for it! Most useful fundraising resource – My most useful fundraising resource is friends and colleagues. They are the best “database” for potential sources of funding, and having that personal connection is so much more effective than any other form of fundraising. Why I love non-profit work – I left a $5b corporation to work in the non-profit world because I wanted to know that the work I was doing was making a difference in people’s lives. Working for a non-profit organization allows me to use my skills and talents in ways that truly have an impact and that gives me a total sense of fulfillment. Favorite quote – “Be the change that you want to see in the world.” - Mohandas Gandhi Hobbies –My husband and I are movie fanatics! We must own over 2,000 DVDs. Also in my spare time I volunteer for other non-profit organizations like IAO and OVAC, and I serve on the Board of Directors for The Red Line Foundation. Family – My husband and I have been together for 18 years, and married for 8 of those 18 years. We don’t have any children (yet), but my sister just had her first baby, so I am a proud auntie and I can’t wait to baby-sit!
