THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER Lost in Translation Many American brands are icons of their industries. When we think of sodas, we think Coke or Pepsi. When we think fast food, we think McDonald’s. When we care enough to send the very best, we think Hallmark. What makes these companies and their products instantly recognizable is branding. They have become masters of crafting images and messages that, in the minds of the public, actually stand for the product itself. Yet, messages that are perfect for us may not be for others. If one is not careful to consider the culture, attitude, language, or tendencies of different peoples, some interesting results can occur. For instance, when Coors put its slogan, "Turn it loose," into Spanish, it was read as "Suffer from diarrhea." When Pepsi started marketing its products in China, a nation with many citizens that believe in reincarnation, they used the slogan, "Pepsi Brings You Back to Life". The slogan in Chinese really meant, "Pepsi Brings Your Ancestors Back from the Grave." Finally, when Gerber first started selling baby food in Africa, they used the same packaging as in the United States - with the cute baby on the label. Later they found out that in Africa, companies routinely put pictures on the label of what's inside since most people can't read. Clearly, these companies are well-respected and produce quality products. But because they didn’t take the time to craft their messages for their respective audiences, they were not well received. A one-message-fits-all approach doesn’t work in the world of for profit, and neither does it in nonprofit. Marketing guru Seth Godin offers these three tips for nonprofit fundraising. We all understand these concepts, but a reminder is always good. 1. Nonprofit fundraisers should realize that they are in a “feel good” industry. And this is true of for-profits, too. Tiffany’s doesn’t sell jewelry; it sells the aura and feelings associated with the blue Tiffany box. In Godin’s words, “Just as no one needs bottled water, no one needs to donate.” So think about how your marketing can focus on how you make your donors feel. 2. Stop using interruption marketing. Marketing should be like looking for a mate. You don’t go into a bar and pop the question to strangers. You meet strangers; you turn strangers into friends; friends become girl/boyfriends, and so on. Permission cuts through the clutter and permission is earned over time. 3. Learn from the church. Why does such a large portion of donations go to the Church? First, people have given the Church permission to ask for money; they choose to show up every week. Second, givers are prompted to give by the people around them. Giving becomes a social requirement. Nonprofits should get people around a table, go around the table, and have each person commit to what he/she will give. Seth Godin is an award winning speaker and author on the subject of marketing. Donna McCampbell, Tax Research Manager for MidFirst Bank, asks “Why focus on women’s philanthropy?” Women have become an influential force in the nonprofit world and it may benefit your organization to build a program that will inspire, educate and encourage women to become part of your organization. On September 3, Donna will explore the concept of women’s philanthropy and how it can benefit your organization. Prior to joining MidFirst Bank, Donna was with the Oklahoma City Community Foundation where she provided planning giving services and worked with the Foundation’s Affiliated Funds. Donna also spent 11 years with KPMG as a Tax Senior Manager working primarily in the financial services industry. Donna is a CPA and holds an undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University and a Masters of Accountancy from the University of Oklahoma. Years in Fundraising – 5 Best fundraising tip received – Don’t be afraid to ask. The worst anyone can say is “no”. Most useful fundraising resource – Our Board of Directors. They have so many connections in the community that are invaluable. Why I love non-profit work – Non-profit work is great, because you feel like you are making a real difference in the community. Most of us could work in corporate America and make more money, but we wouldn’t feel the same satisfaction at the end of the day. Favorite quote – “You haven’t failed until you give up.” Hobbies – Gardening (when I have time), painting, knitting, singing, and any other new hobby I can pick up that sounds like fun to try. Family – Fiancé Scott Monetti and our dogs: Millie a border collie mutt, Holly all mutt, Cody the super Chihuahua and our foster dog Martin a Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix. Our chapter goal is $2,450, and to-date our pledges and contributions total $1,445. The Every Member Campaign Advantage Calling Program began in Oklahoma on August 5th, and we encourage you to participate in this worthy endeavor when you receive your call. Twenty-five percent of our overall contribution comes back to the chapter in the form of a grant if we meet or exceed our goal in gifts received. Last year you helped us accomplish our goal, and we recently received a check for $616.25 to assist with expenses for the AFP audioconferences. As a reminder, the Every Member Campaign is AFP’s annual campaign. All local AFP chapters participate on behalf of AFP’s Foundation for Philanthropy. Contributions fund AFP strategic initiatives that advance philanthropy through ethical and effective fundraising. We do this to achieve our mission to enhance philanthropy and volunteerism through programs of education, research and serve that benefit those who lead, serve and support nonprofit institutions. The National EMC goal for 2008 is $520,000. As of July 14th, the EMC had raised more than $187,000. Another note of celebration is that our chapter is one of 75 that has contributed or pledged almost $68,000 to the Chapter Treasury Campaign. CONTINUING EDUCATION 25th Annual National Philanthropy Day November 14, 2008 at The Skirvin Hilton Hotel The Association of Fundraising Professionals Oklahoma Chapter has set November 14 as National Philanthropy Day (NPD), a day of learning and celebration of local philanthropy. National Philanthropy Day will include several trainings for local fundraisers and a luncheon to celebrate local businesses, foundations and individuals who impact philanthropy in Central Oklahoma. V. Burns Hargis, president of Oklahoma State University, will be the keynote speaker at the luncheon celebrating and awarding local philanthropists, scheduled for 12 p.m. that Friday at The Skirvin. We invite all nonprofit leaders and fundraisers to attend NPD where there will be 20 different sessions on fundraising, leadership, team building, and planned giving. This is a great opportunity to learn new trends in the nonprofit sector and to meet your colleagues in the same profession. The next deadline is 1/2/09 for the March 2009 test. Several of your chapter members have formed a study group. If you are interested in joining the group, please call Caroline Gist at 495-5200 ext 1205. AUDIOCONFERENCES Only two more audioconference remaining this year! Remember, audioconferences count as 1.5 points toward CFRE certification requirements. There is no cost for members, a $10 fee for non-members and anyone is welcome to attend.
