The President’s Corner The Power of Kindness The great thing about being President is that I can write about anything I want. So I thought I’d share my thoughts on the power of kindness in our world. Recently, while standing in line at the rental car counter in Minneapolis/St. Paul airport, waiting for my Kia Rondo, the man in front of me seemed quite agitated. Apparently, the car that he had reserved, a 2008 Ford Mustang convertible, was not available. Immediately, I was reminded of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry couldn’t understand how a vehicle he’d reserved wasn’t available. What, after all, was the point of a reservation if the car wasn’t available? But I digress. The poor young woman behind the counter did her best to assuage his anger and was becoming angry herself. I felt very sorry for her. Truly, he had a valid reason for being upset. Had I been in the same situation, I might have been also. But, as I watched this mini soap opera play out, I couldn’t help but think, “If only he would be a little kinder and more understanding that mistakes sometimes happen, I bet the woman behind the counter would bend over backwards to help him.” Ask yourself – if someone came to you with a problem that you personally did not cause but were expected to remedy, would you be more likely to want to help that person if they A) got in your face, berated you and the next six generations of your family, and demand that you fix the problem no matter what the cost, or B) display displeasure at the situation, yet, understand that you were not the cause and politely request that you do all in your power to help? I am continually amazed when I see people get so angry over things that are accidents or mistakes. It’s as if they believe the person on the other side woke up that morning and thought, “Boy, I can’t wait to screw up that person’s life today.” Albert Einstein once said that the most powerful force in the universe is compound interest. Well, I believe that another of the most powerful forces in the universe is the power to persuade and attract using kindness and understanding. Sometimes, a little righteous indignation is what’s needed to get things done. But I have found that in most cases, if you empathize rather than criticize when things go wrong, people will do all that is possible to make things right. Truly, the Golden Rule applies. So the next time you find yourself getting angry over something that didn’t go just as you planned, first try to remember that the person your anger is directed at probably didn’t cause the problem. Second, try using a little kindness to get what you want. I promise, you will get far more accomplished that using anger. "How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world." -William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice Damon King President, AFP OklahomaOctober AFP Luncheon – Internet Marketing Wednesday, October 1, 2008, 11:45 a.m. Sportsman’s Club (4001 NW 39th, Oklahoma City) $10 for AFP members; $20 for nonmembersAlan Muehlenweg, PRC, will share his insight and expertise on internet marketing.
