The President’s Corner

Join Us for National Philanthropy Day 2008!

Each year, AFP Chapters around the United States celebrate National Philanthropy Day. This is a day for professionals in the nonprofit world and those that are donors and volunteers to come together to celebrate the people and organizations that make this world a better place to live. It’s also a day filled with continuing education opportunities for fundraising professionals and volunteers alike.  I invite and encourage everyone, whether you are an AFP member or non-member, to join AFP Oklahoma on Friday, November 14, 2008 at the Skirvin Hilton hotel in downtown Oklahoma City for National Philanthropy Day 2008. The entire day will be packed with great speakers from across the United States, a special awards luncheon, and fantastic opportunities to network with your colleagues and friends.

Registering for NPD is simple. Visit www.afpoklahoma.org and click on the link found on the home page. To download the brochure, click here.

The day begins early with registration opening at 7 a.m. Be sure to arrive early for breakfast and networking prior to the business meeting. At 7:30, all AFP members are invited to attend a brief business meeting to elect Board officers for 2009. All members should have received the slate of candidates via e-mail. You will also be updated on some initiatives that AFP International is planning for the coming year.

From there, the real meat of the day is served. Nearly 20 concurrent sessions will be offered covering a range of topics from major donor development, prospect research and identification, planned giving, Board development, professional development, ethics, and more. All sessions offered are eligible for CFRE continuing education credit. To view the roster of presenters and topics, click here.

At noon, the awards luncheon begins. AFP will present eight awards honoring individuals and organizations in our community for their work in philanthropy. You won’t want to miss our Keynote Speaker, Burns Hargis, President of Oklahoma State University.

National Philanthropy Day ends at 4 pm. But the information you’ll receive and connections you’ll make will stay with you long after. Whether you are a seasoned professional fundraiser or a beginner, there will truly be something for everyone. Please join us.

Damon King
President, AFP Oklahoma

Monthly Luncheon Reminder

Because of National Philanthropy Day and the upcoming holiday season, AFP Oklahoma will not have a November or December luncheon.  We’ll resume our monthly meetings in January 2009.

Every Member Campaign Special

You still have time to be a contender to win FREE training!  The Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits made a gracious offer for one lucky person to receive a $100 gift certificate for the training session of their choice.  If you make a contribution or pledge to the 2008 Every Member Campaign by National Philanthropy Day, November 14, 2008, your name will be entered in a drawing for this special treat.  If you have already made a pledge or contribution, you may make an additional pledge or contribution to have your name entered in the drawing, too.

We are only $555 from meeting our chapter goal of $2,450 this year.  You can help us meet our goal as well as give yourself a chance to win free training!  Remember that twenty-five percent of our overall contribution comes back to our chapter in the form of a grant if we meet or exceed our goal in gifts received.  Thank you!

National Philanthropy Day Award Winners Update

Claire Richard, a Harvard University student, was the 2005 recipient of AFP Oklahoma’s Youth Making a Difference Award.  A senior at Casady School in Oklahoma City at that time, the basis of her nomination was Project Falummichechi, a domestic violence prevention curriculum she developed for elementary schools within the 10.5 counties that comprise the Choctaw Nation.  The program she conceived and implemented as a service-learning requirement at Casady has grown significantly since then.  The Choctaw Nation has increased the number of schools that use the curriculum over the past three years.  Recently, Project Falummichechi received the first place award from the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government Honoring Nations.  The Choctaw Nation received $10,000 for the program as part of the honor.

Jonathan Crider, a 14-year old metro student, won last year’s Youth Making a Difference Award for his work with the Regional Food Bank.  Since the age of 11, Jonathan has organized walk-a-thons and penny drives to raise $50,000 for the organization.  He also volunteers his time and resources to ensure as many Oklahoma children as possible receive backpacks to take home with them on the weekend to ensure they have food when not in school.  Recently, Jonathan was recognized in San Francisco as the “Backpack Program Hero” by ONE X ONE, an international organization committing to fighting childhood poverty.

Congratulations to Claire and Jonathan for their remarkable achievements!
